Meditation for Peace in the Middle East

So many times we are bombarded by the most horrific accounts of the war-torn Middle East. Despite our differing political opinions, the fact remains that many of us will know of someone entrenched in the conflict, and many of us have already had loved ones sent into harm’s way. Indeed some of us may have been personally scarred by the war. Instead of getting caught up in a cycle of despair we can make a difference by sending healing, and this meditation is designed to do just that.

Meditation Preparation

Before beginning the meditation, you may want to make a few preparations. If you like, read the meditation into a tape recorder to play it back for yourself when you wish to engage in the meditation. While you record the meditation, read slowly and pause every once in a while for you to take deep breaths during the mental journey. I suggest moments for pausing or breathing by noting (pause) or (inhale…exhale…) in the meditation. You may want to light a white candle inscribed with a peace sign, dove, or another symbol of peace; alternatively, you can light a black and a white candle for healing and balance. If you want to burn incense, you may want to use a good quality rose or myrrh. Have a pen and a notebook handy if you would like to write about your experiences after the meditation. As you begin the meditation, make certain your environment is free from distraction: turn off the phone ringer, turn down the answering machine if you have one, let the dogs romp outside, put baby down for a nap, make sure kids are suitably occupied, turn off the computer instant messaging system, and shut off your cell phone. Light your candles and incense, play some soft music, and play your meditation tape.

Meditation for Peace in the Middle East

Breathe, feel your chest expand and contract. (Inhale…exhale…) Let your muscles relax, your stress fade away. Tension bunched up in your muscles begins to flow to the surface of your skin (pause), pushing to the surface (pause), fading off, dissipating like vapor. As you inhale, you feel strength, love, peace, energy infusing your body, healing every cell. (Inhale…exhale…) (Pause.)

You see darkness punctuated by points of fiery light. They begin to stream past you; streaks of glittering light. (Pause.) You see a glittering sapphire before you. You concentrate on the blue sapphire. (Inhale…exhale…) You come closer, closer, glittering streaks of light sail past your peripheral vision; the sapphire sphere grows larger in your sight. (Pause.) You begin to see swirls of white...closer...white polar ice caps...closer...brown and green land masses...closer, the land masses become recognizable continents...closer...you see the glittering Mediterranean Sea, the familiar curves and angles of the Near and Middle East. It looks peaceful from up here, perfect, beautiful, the way the Deities intended. (Inhale…exhale…) It’s a sight of such peace, it is silent, exquisite music (pause).

Closer, closer, you being to feel the turmoil, through the atmosphere, you sail just above the land...closer, you see the destruction, the devastation. Watch the images of war flash past your eyes, the bombed-out ruins, the refugees, the broken people, the scorched earth. See it all. (Pause.) Feel the sterility of the land, the natural energy in the land is gone, its spirit is broken. This land has become the feeding grounds for Mot, the God of Death. His grave-like maw is open and sucks the life from this place. People who have become heartless and cruel make their deadly offerings to Him. (Pause.)

Do not despair. Nothing is beyond healing, nothing is beyond redemption, nothing is beyond peace and wholeness. See the horrors...fill them with healing. (Inhale…exhale…) Feel the healing energy flow through your body, feel it flow into the land, into the people, healing the sterility, healing hearts and minds, mending spirits, providing inspirational and compassionate actions, good judgment. (Inhale…exhale…) By your very act of healing, you help Baal, Champion of Humanity, return to the Earth. El, Father of Years, raises his chalice in blessing. You feel overflowing with this never-ending supply of energy because it comes from the Deities, from the very energy of the Universe itself. (Inhale…exhale…) You feel an etheric blanket of peace covering the area, infusing it with comfort, joy, and balance. (Pause.)

You drift backwards, away from the land, back into the atmosphere. (Inhale…exhale…) Feel the balance, the wholeness, spreading, radiating out from the Near and Middle East all over the world. This etheric cover of energy spreads over the entire planet, glittering, suffusing the Earth with healing, filling hearts and minds, strengthening the natural energy, like reinforcing a fragile webbing of spirit. (Pause.) Outward stretches your healing; you feel the healing energy that others are also pouring into the earth. You are an integral part of a vast co-creative endeavor to promote a healing peace on our world. (Pause.) Back you sail, through the edge of the atmosphere. (Inhale…exhale…) You see more of the glittering, healing energy that covers the earth...back...you see the peaceful sapphire that is Earth. (Inhale…Exhale…) Back...stars streak past your eyes...back...you see darkness. (Pause.) It is the warm darkness of your own closed eyes. (Inhale…Exhale…)

Returning from the Meditation

Wiggle your fingers and toes. When you are ready, slowly open your eyes. Wait a few moments before you begin to move or stand. You may feel the need to shake your hands or even wash your hands after performing this healing to rid yourself of any unwanted residue. Be sure to ground after this meditation; visualize any excess energy shifting downward in frequency until it exits out the bottom of your spine and returns to the Earth. Extinguish any candles. After this meditation, be sure to do something restorative for yourself—a cup of herbal tea or chocolate milk, maybe a warm bath, some time spent on a soothing hobby. Thank yourself and the Deities for bringing healing, wholeness, balance, and peace to the Earth. It is enough.
